SaferMoto demos innovative airbag technology in motorcycle safety vests at Virginia City Grand Prix

Alan Cunningham, SaferMoto.com CEO, shows the company’s lightweight airbag-tecnhology vests and jackets to Alexis Roman Hill, executive director, Kids and Horses.

As motorcycling popularity continues to grow, so do accidents involving motorcyclists. Protective gear has evolved with new technology, as well. SaferMoto.com, distributor of one of the most innovative safety products for riders, will be demonstrating its line of lightweight inflatable vests and jackets using protective airbag technology at the Virginia City Grand Prix, April 28-29, 2012, in Virginia City, NV. The annual motorcycle racing event is presented by the Virginia City Motorcycle Club. It attracts 3,000 spectators and close to 1,000 competitors from 13 western states racing in 23 different classes over the two-day event.

SaferMoto.com owner Alan Cunningham, a competitive motorcycle racer himself, said the Grand Prix is an ideal venue for showing the SaferMoto vests and jackets. “These products offer a level of protection that can’t be matched by conventional safety gear and armor,” said Cunningham. A cord connects the vest or jacket to the motorcycle, and inflation from a compact replaceable CO2 cartridge is triggered instantly when the rider falls.

SaferMoto’s vests and jackets have received glowing testimonials from recreational and racing riders alike. After tumbling down a 100-foot embankment, Curtis Zeeb of Tracy, CA, said, “Besides the fact that I was OK from such a spill, I looked my helmet over and found no scratches at all. The vest had totally protected my head and kept it from hitting the ground. I believe the expanded front and back panels kept my head high enough and the protective part around the neck kept my head stable the entire time.”

Professional motorcycle racer Justin Mastalka of Fernley, NV, was quoted in a 2011 USA Today article as saying, “Not only did it deploy like it was supposed to, but my helmet never touched the asphalt.” He credits the SaferMoto.com airbag with preventing him from suffering his eleventh concussion. Bill Skadsen crashed while racing at Thunderhill Raceway, CA, and said, “I was able to push my bike to the pits and go to work Monday morning. This technology is the real deal.”

Airbag-equipped apparel now is used in more than 30 countries worldwide and has been standard equipment for law enforcement departments including the Tokyo Police. SaferMoto.com airbag-equipped jackets and vests for all ages are available online and at select west coast retailers including Big Valley Honda in Reno and Honda Suzuki of Salt Lake.

SaferMoto.com will hold demonstrations of its inflatable vests and jackets in action at the Virginia City Grand Prix exhibitor area at C and Union Streets. The event is free and open to the public. Details are available at www.vcgp.com. More information on SaferMoto is available at www.SaferMoto.com or by contacting 877-250-6686 or sales@SaferMoto.com.

About SaferMoto.com.com:  SaferMoto.com.com was created to offer motorcyclists and equestrians the safest possible experience, whatever their level of performance or competition.  The company, based in Sparks, NV, distributes a full line of Hit-Air vests and jackets using advanced airbag technology to offer an unparalleled level of protection to riders of all ages.  These products now are used by the Tokyo Police Department and in more than 30 countries worldwide.

Sparks, NV, February 27, 2012 – TheatreWorks of Northern Nevada presents Dead Man’s Cell Phone, Sarah Ruhl’s award-winning satiric comedy about a woman who answers a dead man’s cell phone and finds her life turned upside-down.  The play will be presented at 8 pm, March 16, March 17, March 23 and March 24 and at 2 pm, March 18 and March 25 at the Laxalt Auditorium in the Nelson Building, 401 W. 2nd St., Reno.

The local cast of four is directed by Holly Natwora. This play is suitable for ages 16 and older.

In Dead Man’s Cell Phone, the character of Jean decides to answer the incessantly ringing phone of a stranger seated across from her in a café, only to realize that he is deceased. Soon she is telling his callers what she thinks they need to hear as she is drawn into the surprises and mysteries of their lives and her own. Dead Man’s Cell Phone explores how we memorialize the dead and how that remembering changes us.  It is an odyssey that finds humor in confronting  assumptions about morality, redemption and the need to connect in a technologically obsessed world.

The play has garnered acclaim, including praise from the Washington Post: “Satire is her oxygen… In her oddball comedy, Dead Man’s Cell Phone, Sarah Ruhl is vital in her lyrical and biting takes on how we behave.”

Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for seniors and students. For reservations and more information, visit www.twnn.org or call (775) 284-0789.

CHAOS to Cash offers new twist on consignment store sales – Community invited to celebrate grand opening on February 9

The CHAOS to Cash store in Reno offers consignment sales of household and office decor, appliances, tools and more, boosted by the power of listings on internet sites.

Reno, NV, January 4, 2012 – CHAOS to Cash is the name and aim of a unique new Reno business that helps people sell items of value that they no longer want in Reno and beyond, using the power of the Web. The community is invited to celebrate the grand opening and view this new twist on consignment sales, 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (ribbon-cutting by The Chamber at 5:15 p.m.), Thursday, February 9, at the CHAOS to Cash store location, 215 S. Wells Ave. in Reno. Refreshments will be served.

Owner Debbie Cox was inspired by her work as a professional organizer to open the business, which displays and markets an array of consigned goods. “Through my work in helping my clients clear clutter and organize their offices and homes, I discovered that many people were unaware of how to price and market their items, particularly considering the multiple online avenues available now,” said Cox. “We’re not only marketing to Reno, but to the world via the Internet, and we ship anywhere,” she added.

With the tagline “Selling your treasures on the Internet,” Cox said CHAOS to Cash helps people rediscover and recycle possessions they no longer need or want – and make money in the bargain. CHAOS to Cash lists each item in at least two online marketplaces, which could include the largest sites, eBay and Craig’s List, as well as more specialized sites for items, depending upon type of product.

Customers appreciate that CHAOS to Cash takes the hassle factor out of selling unwanted belongings. The store’s services include photographing and researching the value of each item, cataloguing large numbers of items for estate sales, attractively displaying products for sale at the store and removing the need to meet strangers at one’s home through providing a store location. For shoppers, CHAOS to Cash offers an always-evolving treasure trove of items that won’t be found anywhere else.

CHAOS to Cash will take most household décor, furniture, artwork, wall hangings, office furnishings, tools and electrical goods, but not clothing or accessories. Items must be valued at $50 or higher. “We’re a high-tech consignment store and are geared for displaying goods that have a higher value to maximize the potential of both our store display space and the online markets that we use,” said Cox.

CHAOS to Cash is open Thursday through Saturday. For more information, please call 775-560-2994 or visit www.chaostocashreno.com.

“Gourmet Rooster holiday baskets were designed to make holiday giving easy and to inspire creativity and fun for everyone,” said company founder Courtney Barnes.

Barnes is the mother of two small children who always has loved to cook and experiment with different flavors to add pizzazz to all kinds of dishes.  With the encouragement of friends and families who raved about her homemade gifts of jams, spreads and barbecue sauces, she founded Gourmet Rooster specialty foods in 2010 from her Reno kitchen.

Barnes turned her lifelong love of cooking into a challenge once she had children: how to create simple yet delicious family-friendly dishes from basic ingredients.   She expanded upon her repertoire of sauces and spreads that already were a hit with her own family and friends.  She named the company after the collection of roosters in her country-style kitchen and shepherded her company through the test kitchen, production, labeling and distribution processes.  Barnes now is on the brink of seeing her products introduced to major retail outlets.

Gourmet Rooster’s specialty foods are made from Barnes’ own recipes with an emphasis on maintaining the highest quality and taste. The products are aimed at offering something interesting and delicious for cooks of all levels, from the beginner cook to the gourmet chef.

Gourmet Rooster sauces, spreads and holiday baskets are available at numerous specialty stores in Nevada, California, Minnesota and Wisconsin and online at www.gourmetrooster.com.  Barnes’ recipes and easy cooking tips may be found on the company’s Facebook site and on her blog.   For more information, visit the website or call 877-735-1049.

3rd Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival films showcase wilderness in all of its forms

Adam Bradley’s walk from north to south across the length of Nevada had a purpose: explore the impact on wildlife and habitat of the planned transmisison line set to deliver renewably-sourced energy throughout the state.  Photo by John C. Tull.

Reno, Nevada, October 5, 2011 – Nevadans will be hearing the call of the wild as the Nevada Wilderness Project’s 3rd Annual Nevada Wild & Scenic Film Festival appears in three locations: 6 p.m., Thursday, October 13, at The Grove, 95 Foothill Dr. at S. Virginia St., Reno; 7 p.m., Wednesday, October 26 at the Mesquite Community Theater, 150 N. Yucca St., Mesquite; and 6 p.m., Wednesday, November 2 at the Rio Hotel Casino, Brazilia Room, 3700 W. Flamingo Rd., Las Vegas.  The events showcase 100 minutes of films to inspire, engage and energize viewers about wilderness in all of its forms, with additional fun, raffle prizes and eco-informational displays, plus live music, tasty food and micro-brews at the Reno and Las Vegas events.

The festival’s 14 films range in length from two to 28 minutes and in tone from awe-inspiring to quirky as they examine wilderness in all of its forms, from underground labyrinths to mountain heights.  Reno and Las Vegas event tickets are $10 in advance (available at www.wildnevada.org), $12 at the door and $5 for students with ID.  Mesquite event tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door, with youth 13 and under free and are available at the Mesquite Community Theater Box Office, 702-345-4499.

The films include a first for the festival, a Nevada-focused film, Walking the Line: New Energy in the Old West, chronicling Reno resident Adam Bradley’s historic hike tracing the Southwest Intertie Project (SWIP) transmission line’s future route across the state.  The line will carry renewably-sourced energy throughout  Nevada.  “Hiking to raise awareness of the SWIP corridor was a unique experience; the environment may appear desolate, but the journey wasn’t,” said Bradley.  “I was consistently surprised by the amount of wildlife out there as well as the inspiration provided by the landscape,” he added.

Other films include:

  • Animals Save the Planet: Meerkats – One in a series of humorous animated short films produced for Animal Planet by Academy Award-winning studio Aardman Animations (Wallace & Gromit; Chicken Run) in which animals give humans tips on how to live an eco-friendly lifestyle.  In this episode, meerkats weigh in on auto emissions.
  • Nico’s Challenge – A 13-year-old boy faces special challenges when he decides to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest freestanding mountain. His goal: raise money and deliver free wheelchairs to the disabled people of Tanzania.  The film reveals the outcome and much more.
  • Eagles Among the Swarm – This hauntingly beautiful film reveals the thousands of Pacific Dunlin birds who spend the winter in Boundary Bay, British Columbia. At the season’s peak, numbers can reach up to 20,000 birds at a time, with enormous flocks racing and circling over the calm waters like a flickering ballet – all under the watchful eyes of the waiting raptors.
  • Animals Save the Planet: Supermarket Bags – What do camels, kangaroos and pelicans have in common? They bring their own bags when they go shopping.
  • Coast is Clear: Learning from Our Mistakes – The Canadian government is considering a proposal from Enbridge for a 1,170-kilometer pipeline from Alberta’s tar sands to the coast of British Columbia. The pipeline would bring more than 200 crude oil tankers annually to this spectacular coast, many of them larger than the Exxon Valdez.
  • Animals Save the Planet: Energy Efficient Penguin – When a pedaling penguin is your source of power, it’s smart to save fish by switching to energy-saving bulbs.
  • Crossroads: Sage Grouse – A film for the Montana Audubon Society about the impact of oil and gas development on sage grouse, a species recently warranted for listing under the Endangered Species Act.  Sage grouse have been lost from about half of their historical environments.  Their numbers in Nevada have greatly declined due to loss, fragmentation and habitat degradation.
  • Into Darkness – Journey along with a group of cavers who push through impossibly small passages thousands of feet underground to access some of the final frontiers on earth. The images and sounds of these spectacular and remote wilderness caves reveal a fantastic world unlike anything we experience on the surface.
  • Oktapodi – Two octopi help each other in a comical escape from the grasps of a stubborn restaurant cook.
  • The Fishman – That’s what they call sound engineer Mike Kasic, who lives along the Yellowstone River in Livingston, Montana, and spends his days swimming with the current in one of the few remaining undammed rivers in the U.S.   Kasic watches trout in fast currents filled with frothing water tornadoes and stops occasionally to make way for a crossing bison. His message is simple: a river is more than its water; what lies beneath is a wilderness is often overlooked but critical for the ecosystem.
  • Animals Save the Planet: Gassy Cows – This animated short is humorous as well as provocative.  What are all of those flatulent cows doing to the planet?
  • Border Country – Sometimes a mountain is just a mountain, a climb just a climb. But sometimes it’s more than that.  Jeremy Collins and Mikey Schaefer climb a new route on Yosemite’s Middle Cathedral in honor of two friends killed in a climbing accident. The film is a tribute to Jonny Copp and Micah Dash and a response to the catastrophe and the restorative beauty of nature.
  • Brower Youth Award: De’Anthony Jones – De’Anthony is one of six 2010 winners of the Brower Youth Awards established by the Earth Island Institute in honor of the founder and legendary activist David R. Brower. De’Anthony teaches his peers at Mission High School in San Francisco about environmental justice and ecological sustainability.

Jamie Cooke helps business owners with new regulations in free “Business responsibility for retirement plans” seminar

Jamie Cooke, investment and retirement coach and principal with MC2 Wealth Solutions, recently was named an Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) by the Center for Fiduciary Studies.

Reno, NV,  June 16, 2011 — Jamie Cooke, CLU®, ChFC®, CDFA®, AIF®, investment and retirement coach and principal with MC2 Wealth Solutions, is offering a free “Business responsibility for retirement plans” seminar for business owners, fiduciaries and others who are responsible for employee retirement, pension and 401(k) plans.  The seminar will be held 7:30-8:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 19, at the Hyatt Place, 1790 E. Plumb Lane in Reno.

Seminar participants will take away practical action steps to assure they are in full compliance with all requirements.  “Many employers are unaware of their potential legal liability,” said Cooke.  “They don’t realize they can be held personally liable not only for investment losses, but also for funds or stocks that are in their plans,” she added. Federal law in 2012 will mandate that plan sponsors and trustees verify that costs associated with their retirement plans are “reasonable and fair.”

“Understanding costs has until now been very difficult due to the way fees are layered into the plans, but they can amount to thousands of dollars over any one person’s term of employment,” Cooke said.  “MC2 has partnered with a firm specializing in benchmark reporting for plan sponsors so they can objectively compare how their plans stack up in terms of fees.”

Cooke specializes in investment coaching, retirement plans and financial analysis in divorce at MC2 Wealth Solutions, an independent investment firm in Reno.  She recently was awarded the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) designation from the Center for Fiduciary Studies, an organization offering training, tools and resources to promote a culture of fiduciary responsibility and improve decision-making processes of fiduciaries.

The AIF designation signifies specialized knowledge of fiduciary responsibility and the ability to implement policies and procedures that meet a defined standard of care.  The designation is the culmination of a rigorous training program including a comprehensive exam and agreement to abide by the AIF code of ethics.

Locally-owned pharmacies adopt new Sierra Health Mart Pharmacy name

Sierra Health Mart Pharmacy continues a decades-long history of service at three Reno-Tahoe locations under the ownership of David Vasenden, RPh, and Brant Skanson, RPh, along with Terry Vasenden and Julie Skanson.

Reno, NV, April 30, 2011 — Three pharmacies in Reno and Lake Tahoe have proudly operated with local ownership and a long history in northern Nevada, but until now, under three different names: Don’s Pharmacy in downtown Reno, Sierra Compounding Pharmacy in south Reno and Village Pharmacy in Incline Village. Those signs have come down, and the Sierra Health Mart Pharmacy signs are up, signifying a name change, but no change in ownership or service for the pharmacies.

Sierra Health Mart is inviting the community to celebrate the new name and meet its staff at events at all three pharmacies. A new name celebration and ribbon-cutting reception will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 4 at Sierra Health Mart Pharmacy-South Reno, 8040 South Virginia St. New name celebration and customer and medical partner appreciation open houses will be offered from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, May 6 at Sierra Health Mart Pharmacy-Downtown Reno, 501 Ralston St. and Sierra Health Mart Pharmacy-Incline Village, 898 Tanager St.

“We’re excited to unite our three pharmacies under the Sierra Health Mart Pharmacy banner,” said Terry Vasenden, who shares ownership of the group with her husband, pharmacist David Vasenden, along with pharmacist Brant Skanson and his wife, Julie Skanson. “We’re still locally owned, and Brant and David still are available in our pharmacies, dedicated to providing the best possible patient care,” she added.

Sierra Health Mart has been growing and recently has increased its staff, now totaling more than 40 employees. The three pharmacies for several years have been under common ownership and affiliated as locally-owned franchisees of Health Mart Pharmacy, a leading national network of independently-owned pharmacies. The oldest pharmacy in the group, Don’s Pharmacy, has a 40-year tradition in downtown Reno. Terry Vasenden said the new name achieves a more unified identity and also helps patients locate the three pharmacies when directed to a Health Mart Pharmacy by insurance providers.

In addition to being the area’s only locally-owned pharmacy group, Sierra Health Mart Pharmacy is distinguished in being a compounding pharmacy. “Our pharmacists and staff have advanced training in compounding, allowing us to offer customized medications,” said Brant Skanson, RPh. “We can create specialty preparations and custom medications to solve medication challenges by adding flavoring, removing dyes or lactose, changing dosage forms and making medication easier to administer – even for pets,” he added.

“It’s rewarding to be part of a business that can work together in getting Reno and Tahoe healthier – one patient at a time,” said David Vasenden, RPh. “We enjoy giving back to our community through the organizations and charities we’re involved with, as well as providing our free women’s wellness seminars – a Party with a Purpose,” he added. Sierra Health Mart also is unique in offering a nurse educator who provides consultations for women experiencing the effects of perimenopause and menopause.

For more information about Sierra Health Mart Pharmacy, compounded medications or a Party with a Purpose, please call 853-3500 or visit www.SierraHealthMart.com.
