New Start Nevada, a program dedicated to distressed homeowner education, is offering a free seminar featuring expert advice on short sales, loan modifications and foreclosure options, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 24 at the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall, 4001 S. Virginia St. at Peckham Ln. in Reno.

Founded by Realtors® and Certified Distressed Property Experts (CDPE) Tami Ritz and Nicole Reel, New Start Nevada is presenting a series of free workshops open to the community.  “New Start Nevada has proven to be a highly effective program, allowing distressed homeowners direct contact with professionals who can help them the most.” said Ritz.

RealtyTrac reports that Nevada continues to lead the nation in foreclosures, with Washoe County showing one foreclosure filing for every 174 housing units in June, 2011, compared to one in 583 nationwide during the same month.

Panelists at the seminar include Reno real estate attorney Judith A. Otto, whose practice specializes in working with clients facing foreclosure, and Tami Ritz and Nicole Reel, Realtors with Keller Williams Realty Group One, Inc.  Topics covered will include:

  • Who qualifies for a short sale
  • The difference between loan modifications, short sales and foreclosure
  • Tax and credit implications
  • Post-short sale recovery techniques
  • How to avoid fraud in the distressed sales market

Attendees will be able to ask questions after the presentations and also will be given handouts including financial worksheet, sample hardship letter and contact information for resources.

“Our mission at New Start Nevada is to save homeowners from foreclosure and protect our housing market from further decline,” said Reel.
